Outspoken

Despite the lack of interest to create an atmosphere of brotherhood after the war, there were thousands of memorials that proliferated around Spain. During the dictatorship, these reminders had the intentionality of portraying the "Nationalist" party as the martyrs and victims, while there was no mention of the other side's victims. For example, the infamous events of Paracuellos del Jarama were remembered by the regime when the mass graves were identified, a cemetery was built and obscurity was cast about similar atrocities perpetrated by the Nationalists against the "Republicans."

However, once democracy was restored in Spain, a different and identical process unraveled. Those that were forgotten came back to claim their share of influence in the Spanish landscape. Many times, these process involved obscuring the other side's victims.

In rare occasions, such as Elevation 705, memorials intended to remember the victims. Instead, these places of remembrance worked as exaltation of one's party and desecration of the others.
